Busy Monday Night!

Dar and I both forgot that on Monday nights G has dance. Oops. I was planning on taking both of the  kids for a bike ride the second I got home but right before I left work Dar reminded me about dance. I met the fam at the dance studio and was greeted with smiling faces. That’s what I like, a happy wife and kids!

Dar took G inside and I, being the thoughtful husband that I am, downloaded the 2nd Nikki Heat book to the kindle so Dar would have something to read. It’s a book from a fictional writer on a TV show called Castle. It’s a fun show about NYC cops and a tagalong writer who all get into hairy situations while solving murders. Dar and I DVR it, but don’t always get to watch it right away. Anyhoo, I took The Boy home and we went on a bike ride. He was hungry so I made him a bottle and he was good for the entire ride. I thought we only went 4 miles but Google just calculated it as 5 miles. Okay Google, you’ve redeemed yourself from the other day. When we started The Boy had lots to say but after the first mile he got into “The Zone” with his milk and was quiet as a whisper for the rest of the ride.
Dar and G beat us home by a few minutes. I was supposed to have already started dinner but I left my bike computer at home so I didn’t know how long I was gone, or at least that’s the story I’m sticking with. Here are some of Ginger’s finest dance moves.
Awe, look at my beautiful wife being all domestic. Who am I kidding? She makes awesome dinners all the time! Just don’t get between her and olives, you’ll never be the same. During dinner we were having the usual family chat and Ginger piped up in a very serious tone.

Daddy, we need to talk about something. We don’t know what kind of hair style to do for my picture day tomorrow… or what shirt to wear.

Man, she’s cute!
After we solved the hairstyle and shirt debacle, The Boy kept us all entertained with the squint. He was probably trying to outdo G’s cuteness. On Monday nights we have Family Home Evening. It’s blocked out family time where we sing hymns, study scripture, read inspiring stories, have family prayer, and finish with a treat (G’s favorite part). Tonight G was the conductor for the music. Her arms were a’flailin’. The story we read was a quick one but the message is good. It’s called Pinkie. G picked it, wanna guess why?

Wet Willie Time! EWWWwwww!

After we came home from Church and had lunch, I thought “I’ll sit in the recliner, but for only a few minutes”. The plan was to chill for a skosh and then get up and pick up around the house. Everything was going great for about 16 seconds until I fell asleep. I have no idea how long I was out but it wasn’t very long before I was yanked form a slumber by a tiny slobbery finger plunging deep into my ear. Dar and G had cooked up a Wet Willie attack plan to get me when I was helpless. I can’t say I know for sure but I have a pretty good idea that my favorite little girl wouldn’t come up with the idea to Wet Willie me without some serious help from Mommy. Good one, but payback is gonna be sweet and it’s not gonna be a silly Wet Willie!!! Bwahahahahah!rude awakeningwet ear holeG is soooooo FUNNY!Getting creative with meals is a sure-fire way to overcome the obstacle of a bare pantry. Yeah, I know, we went to “SKOSSCO” yesterday. But we didn’t get the weekly restock items like usual. We’ve had these bagels, I’m pretty sure, since the last time we made a “SKOSSCO” trip so it was time they got used. Dar and G put together some killer Bagel Pizzas with onion, olives, bell pepper, and zucchini. G was so excited to help out.

Daddy look, this one is Brigham. See his smile?

nom nom nomThe Boy was pretty excited too, he just loves pushing buttons on the stove so I had to keep turning it back on. That’s normal though even if he isn’t pushing buttons because our stove is on the fritz, it says 350 or 400 right away but it only feels warm and it turns itself off all the time. I’m hoping it’s only the thermostat and not the controller board. Thermostat = $11.00 and the Controller Board = $250.00 I’m keeping my fingers crossed. I’ll probably get in there and check it out this weekend.

ding, pizzas are upDon’t these pizzas look good?

Dar found Nog, things are gonna get crazy!

What a beautiful day, rainy and overcast again! I love this weather. I helped clean the Church building today and had a cycling date with Tyler afterward. He must have either forgot or thought I wouldn’t want to go in the rain but he was wrong. When I called him at 9:45 am he tried to get out of it but I was persistent and I’m glad because it turned out to be an awesome ride. I got to see Napoleon and he even remembered me. He’s such a cool dog and he has a beautiful face, all thick-lipped and squishy. The rain stopped falling just as we started, it couldn’t have been timed better.

napoleon's cute face

This was taken about half way through the ride. When Dar saw this photo she said that I look huge compared to Tyler… Awe, thanks babe. I tried to explain that I’m taller and closer to the camera. It also doesn’t help that I am huge compared to Tyler… really though, the camera angle makes it even worse. What do you think? Leave your thoughts in the comments section at the bottom of this post. Here’s the route we took. The computer on my bike told me that we rode 6.5 miles but Google Maps says its only 5.5 miles. What does Google know anyway!?! Stupid Google, taking back a whole mile from my ride. Okay, I’m better now. I felt great at the end of the ride and Tyler even gave me a parting gift. He bagged up his old Xbox with all kinds of games and is letting me borrow it. SWEET, Thanks Bro!After I got home and devoured lunch it started raining pretty hard again so G just had to go out and play in it. She has some really cute rain gear so when it rains (twice a year for about 48 seconds) she gets super excited to put it on and go puddle jumping.

She took a break from sloshing around to kick up the mushrooms that keep popping up in my yard. They’re funny little round buggers that really root deep in the grass so its hard to get them out. They have spread and I was amazed to see just how many we actually had. I told G that we could go eat them in a salad and she just gave me the “Dad, stop teasing me” look. She can tell when I’m messing with her sometimes now, I’m gonna have to step up my game.

We decided that since we only had about 3 diapers left in the house for The Boy, it would be a good idea to take a family trip to SKOSSCO (Costco – I like Ginger’s version better though) to get diapers and then have awesome SKOSSCO pizza for dinner. Everybody loves SKOSSCO pizza. Did you know that they don’t keep veggie pizza hot and ready but they’ll make one if you order it? We always forget to call while on our way there,  so we end up calling from within the store while we’re shopping and then have to get creative about killing time until the AWESOME SKOSSCO PIZZA is ready. I had the kids because Dar was at the Craft Boutique again so we met up there. She called me as we were pulling up to tell me that she was locked out of her car. I was confused by this because she has a keypad on her door that can be used to unlock the car. Apparently the keypad system stops working if you enter the wrong code a few times. HAHA! Silly Dar! It only locks you out for about 30 seconds though. I wonder how much that useless feature cost me.

Detour <tires screech to a halt> to Jadabugs to check out this new stroller that Dar has been drooling over. I have to admit it’s pretty sweet! It’s like they took two really nice strollers and duct taped them together. Each has all kinds of adjustments that work independent from the other side. One kid can sleep while the other sits up, or one is shaded by the canopy while the other is getting a gnarly forehead burn cause Daddy forgot to reapply the SPF 1800. We’re gonna try to sell our single seat BOB Jogger to get this new fangled contraption.AWE BARNACLES!!! Dar found the Nog, now she’s gonna get all nogged up and start saying embarrassing things, hitting on strangers, and falling down all over the house. At least she waits till the kids are asleep before hitting the nog but
I’m thinking of sending her to a twelve step program for her habit.

Bike Trailer on the Move!

It’s Veteran’s day today, so I thought we should enjoy this beautiful country with a bike ride. After The Boy woke up from his afternoon nap we got ready for our outing. I made sure to grab munchies, drinks, helmets, and a blanket. Once the kids were all cozy in the bike trailer, we headed out. The plan was to ride to Lyn’s Boutique to meet up with Dar and Tara.  I had my fingers crossed that the tires on the trailer wouldn’t go boom again. I didn’t inflate them as much this time. For some reason, when I was planning the route, I thought there was only one bridge on Golf Center, so I took that instead of Jackson… I was wrong. Both Jackson and Golf Center have two bridges. I guess I pictured the Golf Center bridge going over the freeway and the train tracks with one long bridge. Yeah, I know… I’m crazy. Either way it was fun.

Bike trailer is fullG and The Boy in the Bike TrailerHere’s the route we took. It’s 5.2 miles and the only difficult spots were the bridges. Really a nice ride. It was cool out and the sun was going down throughout the duration of the ride so with only about a mile to go, G told me that she was getting cold. I gave them the blanket and she was happy again. The route to Lyn's Holiday BoutiqueBike Trailer over the Golf Center Pkwy BridgeBike Trailer at Monroe & 48Dar was very surprised to see us when we arrived at the Boutique. She couldn’t believe I just hauled 80 pounds worth of kids over five miles. I have to admit I could definitely feel it in my legs but I really felt good. It was way too dark to go back home the same way so it was really lucky that Curtis came to pick up Tara in their truck. I tossed the bike and trailer in the bed of his truck and was happy to not have to do it all over again in the dark. Thanks Curt!

Yogurt Island & Hatch Green Chile

When I went to the training in Pala I told G that if she was really good for mommy, we would take her to Yogurt Island. In the days after I got back we had cake for my birthday and Halloween candy so Yogurt Island got moved to the back of the list, not removed, just postponed. Well, tonight was the night. After dinner and baths, we piled into the car and headed of to the land of frozen tarty goodness. On the way, we dropped off all the crafts that Dar and Tara made to Lyn’s Holiday Boutique, so by the time we arrived at Yogurt Island The Boy was totally asleep. His loss. We brought the video camera anticipating some good faces from him when he tasted the tart frozen yogurt for the first time. Oh, well. Ginger, Dar, and I indulged. We took turns so The Boy wouldn’t be left alone in the car so Dar went in first and once she came out, G and I mounted our attack.

Yogurt Island – so many choices!

yogurt island toppingsWe all have our own different tastes. When it comes to Dar and I it’s clear that opposites do attract. She filled her cup with original tart and pumpkin yogurt, brownies, cheesecake bites, crushed Butterfingers, and Brandini Toffee. I chose  blueberry tart and pineapple/coconut tart yogurt, black berries, and pecans. Ginger ended up with strawberry tart, sprinkles, 2 brownie bites, and three (it had to be three) cherries. Boy did she make out!

Earlier at dinner…

A few days ago we thawed out a tub, yes tub, of Hatch Green Chile and we’ve used it here and there to top various dishes and to punch things up a bit. Tonight was no different. After we were done eating Dar convinced G to try a tiny drip of the chile juice from the tub. That didn’t go so well. Ginger was all smiles until she actually licked it up. There was an instant look of absolute terror in her eyes that was scary at first but now it’s giving me a good chuckle. Bad Parenting 101!Hatch Green Chile JuiceLicking the Hatch Green Chile Juice

Fear of water

Ginger has been making lots of progress when it comes to her fear of water. Up until last month she would freak out if water got on her face or in her ears but ever since we visited the Glade family when they were in town on vacation, she’s been a lot better. Cary Glade and Matt grew up together as military brats. Cary and Tammi, his wife, come spend a week in their time-share in Palm Desert every year and we all go swimming with them. Tammi helped us teach Brigham to hold his breath and I used that same trick on G. Now she likes laying in the tub and letting the water rise around her until it covers her ears. Thank you Tammi for helping Ginger start to overcome her fear of water.

Ginger's fear of waterThe kids were cute in the bath tonight! Every time I start the water The Boy crawls over on his hands and knees right next to where the water hits the base of the tub. He likes the warm splashes and sometimes I use my hand to direct a spray toward him. That kid is gonna be a fish just like his daddy.

bath time for the boybath time for the boyAfter the kids were in bed Tara came over, she and Dar finished getting ready for the craft fair that’s coming up this weekend. It got a little crazy up in here. Tara kept pulling small strips of Dar’s hair up and they were cracking up.

Dar and Tara Goofing offDar with crazy hairI was thinking today about how much training I’ll have to do before I’m ready for the Spartan Race and it’s starting to make more sense to adjust my goals. Training for the Spartan consists of running, running, running while soaked with water and mud and carrying heavy stuff, and more running. Not a chance that I can involve the kids in that kind of training. Something I can do with the kids is ride my bike with them in the trailer behind me. That would be great training the 50 mile Tour de Palm Springs. I did the 25 mile route with Ben last year and it wasn’t as hard as I thought it was gonna be so with some real training I should be able to tackle the 50 mile route. This way I can take G and The Boy out of the house to give Dar some alone time with the new baby come early December.

Tabbouleh, I love you a bit too much

Tabbouleh, Tabouleh,  Tabbouli, or  Tabouli?

Nobody knows… What I do know is that this stuff, whatever you call it, is capital AWESOME! You have to like parsley but after that it’s the most flavorful, light, and refreshing thing you can eat. It’s lemony and bright! I had today off but spent most of it sitting at the kitchen table on my laptop catching up on work stuff so when lunch rolled around I decided to treat myself to some fresh tabbouleh. Here it goes.

Tabbouleh ingredients missing from this picture are the mint, tomatoes, olive oil, and bulgar wheat.Tabouleh Ingredientsfresh lemonslemon juicetaboulehtabouleh on a plateWell, that tabbouleh hit the spot! It needed more lemon juice and olive oil… I ran out. Oh well, I’ll add some later after a trip to the store and then it’ll be even better.

I guess today is all about food. Dar made a really good dinner. My grandma gave me some freshly picked bell peppers that a friend gave her a few days ago so Dar stuffed them with her own version of vegetarian meatloaf. I’m not sure how she came up with the recipe but it was amazing. It consisted of a package of morningstar crumbles, oats, rice, parmesan, italian bread crumbs, garlic, zucchini, ricotta, and spaghetti sauce. I just asked her where she found the recipe and she pointed to her head. It’s a bit heavy on the carbs but that’s what we get for being vegetarian and having a nut allergy in the house. Nut allergies and vegetarianism… that’s a whole ‘nother blog post. She also steamed some carrots and drizzled a honey butter sauce over them. It was all so good. Dar has been much more adventurous in the kitchen since I told her that I want to eat everything Andrew Zimmern eats including the meaty stuff because I want more variety.vegetarian stuffed peppersvegetarian meatloafsteamed carrots with honey and butterbrigham eating carrots

Daddy… these carrots have honey. I really like the milkonyness and the flavor, great job Mommy!

Squint – Brigham’s happy face

Out of respect for Katherine Saubel’s (a very important member of the native community) passing the tribe closed down at three today and will be closed all day tomorrow. I ended up leaving just before four and picked up the kids on my way home. Dar was at an OB appointment, I’m so glad that guys don’t have to do that. I can’t imagine I would handle a Doc all up in my business as well as she does. G has dance on Monday nights so I took the kids home long enough to grab a snack and pick up her tap shoes. The Boy did really good while at G’s dance class. He sat on my lap for the first fifteen minutes and played with my pen and talked and waved to some of the other waiting parents. Then he had enough so we took a walk. He was intrigued by the dancers in the Zumba class next door. We stood there for a bit while he wiggled to the music. I think Dar and Tara could really get into Zumba if they would give it a chance, there were all kinds of men and women (mostly women) in there; some were really good at it and some were obviously beginners but everyone was having fun! After he had enough of that we continued walking past all the shops in the strip mall until we came to the very last shop. They had an open sign that was flashing red and blue. He loved it! He pointed to it and made several exclamations that I’m sure meant something to the effect of “LOOK AT THAT!”, THAT IS SUPER AWESOME!”, or “GET ME ONE OF THOSE NOW!”. Later on I put him in the bed of my truck so he could romp around and I could take some pictures of what i hoped would be the squint but he was holding out on me.

He’s not surprised in this next one, he’s just saying “Oooh Oooh Ooooooooooh”.

Dar made spaghetti for dinner and the most amazing broccoli! She steamed the broccoli and then made this sauce from raw garlic, lemon juice and olive oil. Holy rollie pollie it was tasty! I scraped the bowl with the broccoli florets to get all the tangy goodness at the bottom. It would have been a shame to waste even a single drip. G and The Boy liked it too. Good job Babe! Brigham was being fussy just before dinner, which is actually the norm, so when I was undressing him (spaghetti sauce and kids clothes don’t mix) I left his shirt half way on his head just to see what he would do. He thought it was funny and kept busy trying to take it off until diner was served.

Here comes the Squint!

During dinner The Boy started doing the squint for us. We would squint for him and he would squint for us. It’s a Cotton Family dinner activity favorite. So here are some pictures of our best Brigham Squint, we’ll call this the Cotton Family Squint.

The importance of praying

I taught a lesson at church today about the importance of fathers setting an example for their family by praying together often. Lazy day once we got back from church, I actually fell asleep on the recliner… afternoon nap… Yes! Here are two stories from the lesson I taught (the lesson was from church manual).

We may wonder at times if our children are really learning about Christ and feeling His presence in family prayer. But children are sometimes closer to the Spirit than we realize. President Heber J. Grant wrote about the following experience he had with prayer as a child in the home of President Brigham Young:

“I knelt down … in [Brigham Young’s] home … at family prayers, as a child and as a young man. I bear witness that as a little child, upon more than one occasion, because of the inspiration of the Lord to Brigham Young while he was [asking] God for guidance, I have lifted my head, turned and looked at the place where Brigham Young was praying, to see if the Lord was … there. It seemed to me that he talked to the Lord as one man would talk to another” (Gospel Standards, comp. G. Homer Durham [1941], 223–24).

Prayer should be as inspiring an experience for our children as it was for Heber J. Grant. The following story shows what can happen when family prayer is used the way it should be:

“One father, a quiet, unassuming man, found it hard to express his love for his family. At his wife’s prompting they began holding family prayer, and it became an opportunity to voice what was in his heart. To their daughter, who had misinterpreted her father’s manner as indifference, the experience was a revelation. His prayers were simple and sometimes clumsily worded, but to hear him say ‘Bless my lovely daughter to do good’ thrilled her.

“A timid boy who thought of himself only as a ‘scaredy cat’ felt new pride and self-esteem when his father and mother thanked God for their ‘kind, gentle son.’ And the boy’s self-confidence continued to grow through prayer when even his little brother thanked Heavenly Father for his ‘big, strong brother.’

“In preparation for a family outing in our own family, my husband asked the Lord to bless our family to get along and to enjoy each other’s company. The preaching we had done had gone unheard, but that reverent prayer brought cooperation.

“Our teenage son was tense and sullen whenever we tried to discuss any problem with him. We decided it was important to plan the discussion when he would be most receptive, and that seemed to be at family prayer time in the mornings. It was then that the house was quiet and we shared a humble, sincere feeling. We found the tenseness eased when prayer preceded our discussions.

The Cotton Patch

Went to my Grandma’s house today to visit and pick up a chair that she gave me. I had the kids and my mom with me so we stayed for a good while and let the kids explore the fun stuff outside and all the wide open spaces. I think the pictures tell this story best.
After a great visit to The Cotton Patch my mom twisted my arm to make me let her take us out to lunch. I told her I had the perfect spot… Las Flores! That’s right, can’t have enough of a good thing! It also helped that it was just down the street. This time I got the two enchilada plate and planned to share one with Ginger (counting calories) but turns out she really just wanted rice so I shared with the boy. He loved the enchilada and rice and beans and I over did it again on the chips… but that salsa is so good I just couldn’t stop.

Okay, so I know it’s not a picture of the food all pretty on the plate but you are getting a picture of the food this time. You have to admit I’m getting better at this and with food this good, it’s a wonder you didn’t get a picture of an empty plate.

And here’s the boy after a long morning of donkey petting, grass walking, soil digging, and with a full belly all zonked out on the way home.

After dinner, Dar & Tara busted out some crafty stuff and started getting ready for this craft sale shin-dig that is coming up. The kids and I were bored, so Brigham danced on our new chair (thanks grandma).Ginger wrote a letter to her teacher.

But only when we started playing with the duct tape that Tara and Dar were using for their project did things get really fun.It wasn’t the name brand duct tape but it still had a lot of stick to it, more than I thought it would. Good times.
