Quelfing on T-day

Ginger started off Thanksgiving by drawing a turkey on the back porch. Way to get into the spirit G! I was catching up on the blog, G’ma Sue was playing with the kids and Dar was busy making green bean casserole and candied yams until we left for Tara and Curt’s house. Tara cooked the turkey breast side down and then flipped it for browning near the end. It’s supposed to be more moist that way. It looked and smelled delish! I couldn’t wait to pick it all apart, that’s my favorite part of T-day. I know, I know it’s weird but I’m a vegetarian who loves picking the meat off the turkey. I’m happy to say that I didn’t overdo it, I only had one plate. Yeah, it was a rather large plate, but I stopped at one. Go Me! I only went over my usual calorie intake by about 400 calories. Dar was taking it slow and steady. After the fantastic meal, we busted out Quelf!

Quelf – The unpredictable party game that gives random a new name. It is easy to play. Just pick a character, roll the die and move your character around the game board. As you land on different colored spaces, you’ll have to complete cards form five different categories. As the game progresses, crazy things start to happen and when the dust settles, the laughing finally stops and someone crawls away the winner, you realize you’ve never had this much fun playing a game in your life. Contains: 440 cards in different categories 1 awesome Quelf game board 1 pad of paper and player guide 1 die and 1 thirty-second timer 8 character game pieces 1 giant invisible harpoon

Here’s a visual representation of the events that followed the beginning of the game.

Pie Break! Back to Quelfing. Most of that was because of the game. You gotta try it, it’ll leave you in stitches… or under a table, wrapped in toilet paper, dancing like a chicken, having a war between your own thumbs… I think you get the idea.

Date Night? Oh, how I’ve missed you.

YES! Date night is here! Tara agreed to do a trial run of the kids sleeping at her house because I’ll be staying with Dar and the new bundle of joy for a few days when she arrives. I wonder if the crack down on liquids and carry-ons in the airlines has carried over to stork travel? The liquids’ll be a problem but I’m pretty sure she’ll be traveling light. I’ll ask her how customs was when she arrives. Back to the happenings of the evening. G had a turkey-day feast at school. Dar made green bean casserole and stuffing so that’s pretty much what she ate. G is a stuffing fiend! They made these cute indian hats.Dar asked Ginger to circle five items in the target catalogue that she really wanted for Christmas. G hit her five item limit on the top half of the first page. Did she stop there? Let me just say that I’m surprised her pen didn’t run out of ink.

Brigham was helping. After dinner and bath we took the kids to Auntie’s house and opened the door just enough to shove the kids inside and slam it before peeling away. That’s not completely true, it actually felt weird to know that we weren’t gonna see them for the rest of the night. It was a real treat to be out together and not have a screaming boy that we can’t feed fast enough. We both tried stuff that we’ve never had before and it was a success!

A person should not believe in an ism – he should believe in himself.

The Boy’s shampoo mohawk reminded me of one of my favorite movie’s opening monologue, hence the “ism” title. Take a guess at the movie by leaving a comment below. Brigham has discovered a new fun thing to do during one his most favorite times of the day. He turns on the cold water so it’s just trickling and then drinks it and splashes in it. He’s a funny one.

Stayed home Monday

I stayed home sick from work today but I actually spent the day working on a side project (after some of Portal 2, of course). Dave Rakoczy does incredible film/video work down in Florida and sometimes I’ll do the graphics for his spots. Today was a pretty simple one but I was working slower than usual so it took longer than it should have.

Sick Sunday

I woke up this morning with a head cold. Yuck! I didn’t feel too bad but my nose was all stuffed up and there was lots of pressure in my head. I figured it would be better for me to stay home than go to church and spread it around. Dar took G to church and left The Boy home with me. He goofed around the living room while I chilled on the couch. Not much was accomplished today, and I’m sorry about not taking any pictures. The lesson I missed in at church was about the Second Coming of Christ. But I would, instead, like to share some inspiring words from Elder Larry R. Lawerence that he gave in a talk during General Conference October 2010.

Years ago our 17-year-old son wanted to go on a weekend trip with his friends, who were all good boys. He asked for permission to go. I wanted to say yes, but for some reason I felt uncomfortable about the trip. I shared my feelings with my wife, who was very supportive. “We need to listen to that warning voice,” she said.

Of course, our son was disappointed and asked why we didn’t want him to go. I answered honestly that I didn’t know why. “I just don’t feel good about it,” I explained, “and I love you too much to ignore these feelings inside.” I was quite surprised when he said, “That’s OK, Dad. I understand.”

Young people understand more than we realize because they too have the gift of the Holy Ghost. They are trying to recognize the Spirit when He speaks, and they are watching our example. From us they learn to pay attention to their promptings—that if they “don’t feel good about something,” it’s best not to pursue it.

It’s so important for husbands and wives to be united when making parenting decisions. If either parent doesn’t feel good about something, then permission should not be granted. If either feels uncomfortable about a movie, a television show, a video game, a party, a dress, a swimsuit, or an Internet activity, have the courage to support each other and say no.

Out for breakfast

We got a nice surprise this morning, Curt & Tara invited us to go to breakfast with them. YAY! I can’t remember the last time we went out for breakfast. What a treat! Tara put some quarters in the toy machines for Ginger and the shenanigans ensued.
The Boy started getting restless when we ran out of fruit so I took him outside. I can’t have him screaming in the restaurant, can I? G is really good about remembering to change the calendar, she’s really looking forward to T day. We keep it on our pantry door and G drags a kitchen chair over every day to move the leaf to the current day. She’s so cute!
I finally got around to hooking up the Xbox Tyler let me borrow. I’m not sure when I’ll have time to play it but I’ll deal with one thing at a time here.

Apple Leather Anyone?

Dar hasn’t been feeling good today. She had blurred vision and dizziness and felt all around yucky. Here’s what I came home to. She was trying to relax on the couch while the kids mostly entertained themselves. Good thing too, cause it’s hard to settle down while keeping the munchkins happy. She called someone at Labor & Delivery and they told her the only thing that they could tell her, which was to come in. Matt came rushing in, thinking that the situation was really serious (miscommunication) and Dar decided to go get checked out. I stayed home with the kids while they went to the hospital. Luckily everything was okay but she was told to keep a watch on it and to come back if it happens again. I’m pretty sure it’s a blood pressure thing. She’s been having some pretty strong contraction and her feet are swollen like water balloons, that paired with the dizziness and blurred vision makes for a pretty miserable last month of pregnancy. We’re both looking forward to this baby entering the world.
We had some apples that were about to go bad so we decided to make something with them. We’ve done this once or twice before and it’s so simple and  turns out great so we gave it another shot. To make apple leather all you do is blend cored and washed apples and then dehydrate them. Simple. G is a great kitchen helper, she loves cooking and eating what she’s made. She had some trouble getting the melon-baller started. BEST WAY TO CORE APPLES!!!… wait… I could have used the little do-hickey we have that cores and slices in one move. Dang it! Oh well. It was fun this way. The apples would have blended faster if they were cut up smaller too… next time. Our dehydrator only has one tray for making fruit leather but we had three trays worth of apple sauce so we improvised. I used freezer paper/wax paper and cut it to size. It worked okay but peeling it off was a bit of a pain. Saran wrap would have peeled off better but I’m not sure how I would have cut it to fit. I guess it wouldn’t have to fit exactly… I don’t know. I’ll figure it out next time. Either way it was yummy! Doesn’t it look like pumpkin pie filling?

Surprise of the night, G likes Cabbage & Onions. I had that cooking while we worked on the apple leather. It surprises me what she likes and doesn’t like sometimes.

The Stars at NIGHT, are Big and BRIGHT…

The Boy stole the remote this morning. I don’t know what it is about the remote but he snags it whenever he possibly can. I caught him in the kitchen with it just having a grand ol’ time. He didn’t care that there’s no TV in the kitchen. We have to be careful though, because he bites the buttons and little pieces of them come off.I stole the remote Ginger drew me the most adorable card last night while I was fencing so I had to put it up at work today and take a picture so she could see it. Love you G, thanks for being so sweet!Office artTara and Curt came home today from their New Braunfel, Texas getaway. They had a great time and Tara BROUGHT GIFTS!!! Very thoughtful gifts actually. Sweet Potato Butter for Dar. She’s a Pumpkin/Sweet Potato fiend!Sweet Potato Butter Fancy MustardBleu Cheese Herb Mustard for me. Bleu Cheese? YUM! Mustard? YUM! I’m gonna have to give this a try right away!
Bleu Cheese Herb MustardG got a really cute hand-made hair bow with a little purple princess crown in the middle of it. G loves hair accessories and she LOOOOOVES purple!!!Princess Hair ThingTara brought a book for The Boy that covers Texas’ history and land marks. Couldn’t have given Brigham a better present, The Boy loves to eat books!Texas BookAnd she even bought a gift for our little baby-on-the-way. See you in early Dec baby girl. It’s a diaper cover that has a Christmas tree made of ribbon on the booty. RUFFLE BUTT!!! Yeah, yeah, I know, you’ll get pictures.Christmas Diaper CoverTara, thank you for the very thoughtful gifts. You know us all pretty well but we talked about it after you left and we all decided that we would have much rather had cheap plastic key chains that you picked up in the airport just before your flight home. HAHA, yeah right!

Big Sweaty Man.

I had another half day at work today. There was a death in the tribe so they closed for a half day out of respect. I did some blog research and I’m working on expanding this site to have different menus and other new features. We’ll se how it goes. I threw together a dinner of tortellini and sautéed broccoli and zucchini. It turned out okay. The boy really dug the broccoli. G made a toot during dinner and then raised her had to announce it. I’m not sure where she get’s this stuff from, must be her mother. Wink wink. I hurried through dinner so I could help out Dar by bathing the kids before I left for fencing class. It hurts her pregnant belly to bend over the tub to scrub the munchkins.
Fencing kicked my butt tonight. I that guy from Mexico again and he pummeled me. I love fencing, it’s a serious cardio workout that you don’t have time to think about because you’re so focused on making attacks and parrying. My legs are gonna be sore tomorrow, I can feel it in my calves already… I should probably stretch… nah. There is a long-standing tradition in the Cotton household of giving super sweaty hugs. If I didn’t keep up the tradition, what kind of man would I be? Dar knew what was coming, it’s a good thing she loves me.
While I was in class G wrote me a precious note. I love that girl! Dar helped her spell “for daddy” but the rest is all G.

Ginger’s first photoblog

G wanted to do some photo blogging too so I let her use our  little point & shoot. She’s actually pretty good. Here’s her session with The Boy while Dar and I were making dinner.
